The box and whisker diagram (the boxplot) is a graphical representation of the measures (statistics) of the sample. The middle half of the data is represented by a rectangle. A line is drawn across the rectangle at the median. The lines that extend from the quartiles are the whiskers. The whiskers sometimes might not extend to the minimum and maximum values of the sample. The boxplot can be used to identify the differences among the same variable of several samples.
